A stock index is a composite of a number of Stocks which share certain key criteria. For many major stock indices like the S&P 500, Market Capitalisation is the significant factor. Indices can also be price-weighted (for example the DJIA - Dow Jones Industrial Average). Other classifications like industry sector or geographic focus may also be used to group Stocks together into an index.
